What EPA Section 608 Certification Is

Section 608 of the Clean Air Act requires technicians who work on stationary refrigeration and air conditioning equipment to be certified before they can purchase refrigerant or service equipment that contains it. Certification is split into four types, and which one (or ones) you need depends on the equipment you work on. Required for all technicians. Covers ozone depletion, the Clean Air Act Section 608, recovery techniques, and general safety.

Overview of Type I

Small appliances such as refrigerators, window AC units, and vending machines with 5 lbs or less of refrigerant.

Universal Certification

A technician who is certified in Core plus all three of Type I, Type II and Type III is generally referred to as holding Universal certification. Rather than studying each section in isolation, preparing with a mixed set of questions from all four areas can help you see how they relate. Our Universal practice test combines all four sections and reports a score for each.

Suggested Study Sequence

1. Start with Core — it's required for every technician and introduces the regulatory concepts (recovery, evacuation, safety) that show up again in every other section.
2. Move to the Type section(s) that match the equipment you actually work on, or work through Type I, II and III in order if you're pursuing Universal certification.
3. Use free practice questions first to find weak areas, then unlock full practice and Exam Mode to build speed and confidence under timed conditions.
4. Review missed questions rather than only repeating what you already know — a focused mistake list is more useful than repeating full random sets.

How to Use Practice Tests Effectively

• Read every explanation, not just for questions you missed — understanding why a correct answer is correct catches gaps a lucky guess would hide.
• Use untimed Practice Mode while you're still learning a section, then switch to timed Exam Mode once you're answering most questions correctly.
• Revisit your weakest section from the diagnostic or Universal test rather than practicing everything evenly.
• Treat a passing practice score as a readiness signal, not a guarantee — confirm the exact format and passing requirements with your certifying organization before test day.
